Questionnaire on film logo

Results from film logo questions

These are the results I got from my questionnaire on surveymonkey, I am pleased with my results because the film logo my audience chose was the logo I was moist confident in and also the logo I put most time and thought into and I believed this logo was the most unique. I asked my audience if they thought that my logo was similar to any existing logos and all of my responses said no that they though it was different from the logos from big production companies. I am very happy with my results and happy that my audience has chosen the logo I thought was best suited for my film.

collective identity

The Inbetweeners movie is about 4 teenage friends who have just finished their A-levels and are about to leave secondary school for good, and Mr Gilbert their sarcastic sixth form tutor. In their final week of Jay’s grandfather dies, Simon is dumped by his girlfriend and Will’s divorced father informs him that he has just married his much younger girlfriend. The 4 boys decide to go on holiday together to get away from the stress of home, Neil books the boys a trip to Malia, Crete.British youth are represented negatively in this film, the boys are represented as irresponsible, sex crazed, childish and shallow.  The characters in the Inbetweeners appeal to a wide audience. Each character of the Inbetweeners has a different personality, the idiot, the geek, the over confident and the normal guy. Most of the Characters use a lot of non-standard English, which the media assumes most teenagers use. They use slang language which mostly have crude meanings. There is a difference in the way the characters in the movie speak, which shows different representations of British youth. Will’s character is smart, confident, well read, quick-witted and outspoken. Will does not speak like the other characters in the movie, there is a clear difference in the way he communicates with the other characters. Jay is the complete opposite to will, Jay constantly uses foul language, he constantly refers to sex and uses a lot of slang words which others do not understand.

The Characters behave differently during the movie, Will is the mature character who tries getting the rest of the group to behave properly whereas jay is the one who gets the group in trouble. Jay is represented as a trouble maker, the one who lies in order for others to think he is cool. Jay is represented as being peer pressured to do things like drugs etc. in order to fit in with his age group. The movie is set in Crete which is a holiday destination for young people to get drunk, party and get away with things they wouldn’t if they were in the U.K.  The movie shows the boys going to clubs, partying getting drunk and aggressive this represents how the British youths are portrayed in society.
The Inbetweeners links with collective identity theory as it follows some of the theorist ideas.Stryker theory argued that people create their identity by interacting with others. This is shown in the movie as the boys start to spend more time together, the audience can see that the characters develop a consistent set of behaviours such as constantly getting drunk, getting in trouble or trying to chat up a girl. This behaviours are expected from the characters as this behaviour is consistent during the movie and is become a ‘social expectation’.The Inbetweeners supports Tafjal and Turner’s theory, their theory says that people don’t just have one “personal self” but several selves. In the movie we see the characters change personalities around different people. When Simon was with his ex-girlfriend his personality changed to suit her needs and diverged away from his friends in order to impress her. This is the same for Will, social identity changed when he meet a girl who he thought was completely out of his league, he started to act differently in other to get the girl to notice him, he tried to be more confident around her which is not we see a lot in the rest of the movie when he is with his friends. Will changes from being the geek to the ‘ladies’ man’.There is evidence of Bakhtin theory in this film, in the beginning of the film Jay is represented as a sex crazed, irresponsible teenager. As the movie continued his identity started to change as he was no longer attracted to the typical skinny, blonde girl he usually goes for. Jay became more caring, kind and thoughtful which was different from the way he behaved in the beginning of the movie.

Narrative Theory essay

The Spectacular Now is a movie about Sutter Keely who is focused on living in the “Now”. Sutter loves to party and has no plans for the future, he is an alcoholic but refuses to see so. Sutter meets a girl Aimee Finecky who is different, she dreams of a future while Sutter lives in a delusion of having a spectacular now.
Todorov theory applies to The Spectacular Now, the movie starts with everything being fine, Sutter is happy living with his beautiful girlfriend, he has an amazing job and is the popular guy. This changes when a problem occurs as Sutter’s girlfriend dumps him and Sutter starts to drink more. This disequilibrium is the start of the main story line is the film, without this problem happening Sutter would have not met Aimee. According to Todorov there is a new equilibrium, which happens in the movie as Sutter and Aimee start becoming close and everything becomes happy and the problem is solved. However this Todorov’s theory repeats itself as a disequilibrium happens when Aimee forces Sutter to go and visit his father which didn’t turn out well, the disequilibrium became worse when Sutter gets angry with Aimee and tells her to get out of the his car and she is hit by a bus. As Todorov said there is a new equilibrium which was Sutter going after Aimee as she moved city.
Levi-Strauss believed there are binary opposites in films, this is evident in the spectacular now, as Sutter lives in a “Spectacular now”, while Aimee plans for a future and wants to go to university. A clear binary opposite in the movie is between the two main characters, Aimee is innocent the ‘nice girl’ while Sutter is a bad-boy who is a budding alcoholic.  There are binary opposites of love vs hate, Aimee is in love with Sutter but he doesn’t think he is worthy of love. There is binary opposite between Aimee and Sutter’s ex-girlfriend (Cassidy), Aimee is the innocent girl who doesn’t wear any make-up, unpopular, reads fiction novels, and has never kissed a boy where Cassidy is the popular girl, wears a lot of make-up the “whore”.
In the spectacular now, there are some of Propp’s 7 broad character types. In the film Aimee and Sutter take on different roles of the character types. During the course of the film, Aimee is mainly the princess as she ends up being together with Sutter at the end of the film, but Aimee changes course in the film from the helper, to the dispatcher. She makes Sutter realize he has a problem and help him try and solve it to make him realize he is living in a deluded world of a specular now. Sutter goes from being the villain to being a hero and this role switches back and forth for Sutter. He is fighting his own demons therefore making him the Villain but also makes the hero when he realizes he is the reason he is not moving forward.
Barthes believed a film was either closed or open. The spectacular now is a closed film. There is only one obvious storyline, one obvious ending which is Sutter going after Aimee. The film has an obvious narrative and there is no room for it to unraveled different ways because the narrative is very clear from the beginning.
There are elements of Barthes action code in this movie such as Aimee calling Sutter while in a different shot Sutter is looking at the phone, the audience is left wondering if he will pick the call or not. Unlike action/thriller movies there are no action codes like a character pulling out a gun so the audience is left wondering if they will shot another character. There are a lot of Enigma codes in the spectacular now, the audience is left with questions which are later answered in the movie. The first Enigma code is when Sutter wakes to find he passed out on a stranger’s lawn, this leaves the audience with questions of how he got there, this is later revealed in the movie, and the audience’s questions are answered. Another unanswered question was if Sutter was going to get back with his ex-girlfriend, this question is dragged on till the end of the movie.

The spectacular now is in a linear narrative, the movie goes in story starting from the beginning till the end, however the first few scenes are of Sutter having flashbacks to how amazing his previous life was. The movie has elements of non-linear narrative, when Sutter gets drunk again he gets flashbacks of the people he’s let down and disappointed. Apart from the flashbacks Sutter has, most of the movie goes in an order, it has a beginning, middle and an end.

Production Logo

These are my logos for my production company, I have named my production company Global productions. I researched other productions such as warner Brothers and universal and used them for assistants in making my logo. At the moment the first logo looks more professional, I will need to make more logos to develop and get more ideas.
I will be asking an audience which they prefer and choose from the majority.
